More About Auto Insurance
When you buy car insurance, your insurance company will agree to pay for certain costs related to wrecks or other vehicle damage. Though you hope that these hazards will never occur, there is of course no guarantee that you’ll always avoid such mishaps. As long as you have car insurance, you’ll have a guarantee of protection against many of the costly vehicle losses that might arise at any time.
Why do I need car insurance?
The primary benefit of car insurance is that it enables you to receive substantial help paying for your losses following accidents. Therefore, coverage can go a long way towards protecting your own wallet in the event of an unexpected vehicle loss.
Not only that, but nearly all Texas drivers, by law, must carry a policy. As an at-fault insurance state, Texas requires drivers who cause wrecks to pay for the damage they do to other drivers, pedestrians or other third parties. As a result, it requires drivers to carry minimum amounts of auto coverage. So, if you drive without coverage, you could face significant penalties.
What is the minimum coverage I need?
To enforce its at-fault insurance laws, Texas requires drivers to have at least a minimum amount of liability insurance. Liability coverage pays third parties harmed as a result of the at-fault driver’s mistakes. The minimum available coverage for Texas drivers is:
-
$30,000 Bodily Injury Liability Coverage per person
-
$60,000 Bodily Injury Liability Coverage per accident
Bodily injury liability coverage pays for third-party injury costs, and contains split limits depending on the number of people injured. Property damage liability coverage pays for third-party property damage, such as damage to another person’s car or the damage to a building you hit.
Please note, this is only the minimum coverage required for a Texas driver to operate a vehicle legally. Therefore, we always recommend that you carry higher liability coverage limits, and we’ll ensure that you can receive this additional coverage at an affordable price.
What does full auto insurance cover?
If you only carry the minimum Texas liability limits, then you will likely have no coverage in areas where you likely need protection.
For example, a minimum liability policy cannot provide coverage for your own vehicle damage or injury costs. To get such protection, you will likely need to add other coverage to your policy, such as:
-
Collision Insurance: This coverage will pay to repair your vehicle following wrecks.
-
Comprehensive Insurance: If a hazard that is not related to a wreck causes vehicle damage, then this coverage can help you pay for the repairs. Your policy might pay for damage resulting from fires, weather, falling objects, theft, vandalism or situations where you strike an animal.
-
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Should you become the victim of a hit-and-run accident, or if an at-fault party does not have liability insurance, this coverage can pay for your own losses where the missing third-party coverage cannot.
-
Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Following a wreck, this coverage pays for the injury costs of you and your passengers. PIP coverage can also cover lost income and related hardships.
Your policy might also offer roadside assistance coverage and rental car reimbursement. Other expanded benefits might include gap insurance, replacement cost vehicle coverage, accessories endorsements and more.
Keep in mind, your standard auto policy won’t provide coverage for motorcycles, RVs, boats or other recreational vehicles. To insure these items, you will need separate policies.
How much will my auto insurance policy cost?
There are many risk factors that might influence your auto insurance cost. These include the value of your vehicle, your history of insurance claims, your location, credit score, driving record and the amount of coverage you buy.
Your agent is happy to help you review multiple coverage options to choose the one that is best for you. As an independent agency, we offer numerous policy options from multiple insurers. Therefore, you have a choice of policies and you can find one that is always in your best interest both based on your budget and your coverage needs.
